sources of heat energy

                             Sources of heat energy

In science we are learning about the 5 sources heat energy is made of.
The 5 sources are:  Mechanical Energy, Radiant Energy, Nuclear Energy, Electrical Energy, and Chemical Energy.

Mechanical Energy: The energy a substance or system has because of its motion.

The three types of forces that can be used to convert mechanical energy into heat are:

a) Friction: Is caused when two surfaces rub against each other.
b) Distortion: Is a force that causes objects to change their shape.
c) Compression: Is a force that acts to squeeze matter into a smaller space.

Radiant Energy: This is energy that travels in wave like rays.

radiant energy is the changing of electrons. it can travel through any substances like air, glass, liquid, and space.

here is a example of radiant energy.

the sun passes radiant energy to earth.

here are some everyday examples of radiant energy:
  • campfires
  • microwaves
  • heat from stove or oven
  • heat from a over-used computer
Nuclear Energy: Nuclear energy is produced by fission of uranium. this is the splitting of a uranium atoms.
In fission, nuclear energy produces heat energy. Fission's heat is used to generate electric power in locations worldwide.
this is how nuclear plants look like:
Electrical Energy: Energy carried by moving electrons in an electric conductor.
Electrical energy is often converted to heat energy.
Electrical energy may be produced by:
a) Converting the mechanical energy of running water as in a hydro generating station.
b) Converting the heat energy of nuclear reactions or burning fossil fuels. the heat is used to produce steam which turns the generators to produce electricity.
here is a picture of electrical energy. this bulb provides energy and heat.
Chemical Energy: Energy stored in bonds between atoms and molecules.
Chemical reactions may be used to produce energy. In a chemical reaction new materials are produced.
In a battery, chemicals react to produce new chemicals, electrical energy, and heat energy.

Derek's band post

Hello class 7A, my name is Derek.

Today I am going to talk about band class. In band class we are still learning how to play our instruments properly. We have 3 flutes, 2 trumpets, one percussionist and me. I play the trombone and the violin. We are also learning about the composers of the songs we are playing. Some composers include: Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Dvorak and many other composers. We also learn about the different notes in music. The length of a note is measured in 1 beat. A note with 1 beat would be called a quarter note. A note with 2 beats would be a half note, and a note would be 4 beats. These are just the basic beats, it gets too complicated after this.

The instrument I play in band is the trombone. It is a relatively large instrument with a slider. Too play the instrument, you do not blow into the mouthpiece, but you vibrate your lips inside the mouthpiece to play. To play different notes, you must slide the slider to a specific location to play the note. Too play higher notes, you will make a smaller but faster vibration with your lips To play lower notes, you must make a wider but slower vibration with your lips.

In band class we play multiple songs, which includes: Forrest Gump, Irish Pippers, We will Rock You and many other songs. In band we also practice playing scales and more complicated notes. Our band class usually consists of 3 parts. First, we play our scales. Second, we play our pieces from our book, and third we play our score music.

math: decimals, percent  and fractions

Decimal numbers: are numbers that are written according to their place value. the decimal point is used to separate whole numbers from number values less than one

Fraction: is a numerical value that is not a whole number and a fraction is part of a whole.

Percent: is a number or an amount in each hundred

A fraction, percent or decimal can change the form it is written as  but the value of the numbers don't change. Example: A half can be written as a fraction 1/2 , as a decimal o.5 and as a percentage 50%
if you want to  convert a decimal to a fraction, re-write using place value as denominator + simplify if possible. if you want to convert a decimal to a percent, multiply decimal by 100( move decimal 2 places right.) if you want to convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. if you want to convert a fraction to a percent divide the numerator by the denominator + multiply by 100. if you want to convert a  percent to a decimal, divide by 100( move the decimal 2 places left.) if you want to convert a percent to a fraction, rewrite denominator of 100 + simplify, if possible.

when estimating percent you can easily use your benchmarks ( 50%, 25%,10%,5%, 1%0)
50%:divide by2, 25%:divide by 4, 10%: move the decimal  1 place to the left. 5%: move 1 decimal place to the left then divide by 2 ,1%: move the decimal 2 places to the left. Example: 45% of 40, since 45 is not one of our benchmarks you can use 25%,10% and 10%. once you have did the math add the total amount of 25%,10% and 10% and you will get 18.

Our Catholic Faith

  Our Catholic Faith

Religion is our belief in God as Catholic people. We learn about God and evangelize about him. We learn that God is Three Divine Persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is called the Blessed Trinity. As human beings, we are not able to understand fully, but reading the gospels helps us to understand. All our beliefs as Catholics revolve around the mystery of the Blessed Trinity because it's the mystery of who God is. God has demonstrated his love through the Blessed Trinity, by sending his only Son, to be the Savior of the world. Also God has created us in his image. So, we are meant to love God through loving relationships.
Everyone who was baptized in the name of the Blessed Trinity, were set apart to a mission, a mission to evangelize. Evangelization is so important, that recent popes have spoken about it to the whole church in letters, and in other documents.

On Tuesday, January 20th, the Grade 7 and 8 students had a track meet at the University of Manitoba at the Max Bell Center. It was from 9:00 to 4:00. The events for the Grade 7's were 60m Boys, 60m Girls, 300m Boys, 300m Girls, 1200m Boys, 1200m Girls, Girls High Jump, Girls Triple Jump, Boys Long Jump, Boys Shotput, and finally, the 4x200 relays. St. Maurice did excellent overall, placing 1st in the Grade 7 co-ed relay team including Alycia, T.J., Claire and myself. Our school also placed well in many other events including Long Jump, 60m, and 1200m.  It was a very fun experience and I recommend the people who did not decide to participate at this track meet participate at the next one, at the same location, on Thursday, February 5th. Again, I would like to congratulate everyone from St. Maurice from doing an amazing job at the track meet.

Here is a video of my 60m race from the meet:

Grammar in ELA
In ELA we are learning about grammar. Grammar is basically the rules and structure of a language. Of course, in ELA we are learning about grammar in the English language, but grammar is in every language.
First, we learned about nouns. Nouns are person places or things. In the sentence, “Miss Teetaert is my ICT teacher”, Miss Teetaert, ICT, and teacher are all nouns. Another way to say noun, would be subject. There are two types of nouns: proper and common. Common nouns are things that are very general like school or boy. Proper nouns are directed especially toward a thing such as St. Maurice or Jeff. They always have a capital letter at the beginning of them.

Pronouns are words that replace nouns. ‘’he” would be the pronoun if we wanted to replace “Bob”. Other pronouns could be they, she, you etc...

After we learned about nouns, we learned about verbs or predicates. Verbs are actions that someone or something does. In the sentence, “I ate my apple”, ate would be the verb.
There has to be a way to describe nouns and verbs, so we use adverbs and adjectives. An adverb describes the verb. In the sentence, “He ran very fast”, run would be the verb and fast would be the adverb because it described the way he ran. Adjectives describe nouns. In the sentence, “The car is black”, black would be the adjective and car would be the noun because the car is the thing and black describes the way the car is.

That's all I have to say for grammar so here's a short video that I thought you guys might enjoy.

Thanks for listening to my blog post!!!

Calligraphy in Art

This year in Art our class is leaning about Calligraphy.Calligraphy is an art of forming beautiful letters by hand and arranging them well.  It is a set of skill for positioning and inscribing words. Calligraphy is a Greek word which means "beauty" It represents our ancestors for they were the ones who created it. In the 19th century, flat-edged pens also known as calligraphy pens, were replaced by the fountain pens, so it became difficult to achieve the beautiful curves of calligraphy letters with these replaced pens, due to its round tips. Calligraphy is commonly used to write wedding invitations, and letters for special events. It is well known over the globe. Calligraphy is meant for right-handed people, although left handed people can also try, but it maybe more challenging to do so. Today there are many different styles of calligraphy. Here is a short video on calligraphy writing in the Gothic Quadrata style.

Science Thermometers

Thermometers

  By: Elisa Gan

In science, we have been learning about thermometers. There are three different scales that could be used on a thermometer. They are: Kelvin, Celsius, and Fahrenheit. All of these scales have different number readings for the same temperature. An example would be for water's freezing point. In Celsius, it would be 0 degrees Celsius. In Fahrenheit, 32 degrees, and in Kelvin it would be 273 degrees. There are three main types of thermometers: liquid-in-glass, gas, and metal thermometers.

On a liquid-in-glass thermometer, there are 5 main parts. They are: the scale, stem, bore, the liquid inside, and the bulb. The scale is the numbers on the thermometer that tells you the temperature. The stem is the outside of the thermometer. The bore is the inside part of the thermometer that holds he liquid inside of it. The place where the liquid is stored is called the bulb and is located at the bottom of the thermometer. The liquid inside of a thermometer could be mercury or alcohol. In schools, it is more likely that the liquid would be alcohol because it is less poisonous than mercury. Alcohol is also a lot cheaper than it is to have mercury in a thermometer. Some advantages of having mercury are that it doesn't stick to the glass as often as alcohol does. It can also be used for a lot higher temperatures than alcohol. Another difference between the two is their colour. Mercury is silver and alcohol could be blue or red depending on the colouring that has been used. This thermometer is the most commonly used thermometer.

Another thermometer was the gas thermometer. The gas inside this thermometer expands and contracts very easily making it very precise. The advantage between this thermometer and the liquid-in-glass thermometer, is that it can reach temperatures a lot higher than the liquid-in-glass thermometer. The most commonly used gases in this thermometer are air, nitrogen, and hydrogen.

The other thermometer was the metal thermometer. Most of these thermometers are made out of a bimetallic strip. This strip is made by join together two very thin strips of two different types of metals. In these thermometers, the mos commonly used metals are brass and steel. These two metals are used because their expansion and contraction rates are really different. Brass is the metal that would expand and contract a lot quicker than the steel. When the coil in the thermometer is heated, it would open up, and when it is cooled, it would contract and tighten up.

Recycling. Sara tadez.

Sara's Blog Post.

RECYCLE!!

Today I will be sharing with you some information about recycling.
Recycling is the process of making or manufacturing new products, that has already been used in its own way. Items you can recycle are usually made out of aluminum, plastic, water bottles, and certain types of paper. Recycling is important because it helps make the life longer of something that has already been used. This does not only benefit us humans, but it helps our earth and environment in many ways

For an example we know that paper is made from trees getting cut down and manufactured in factories. When we recycle, we can reduce the amount of trees getting cut down, and reuse our paper by recycling it and helps our environment. Recycling also saves energy because it takes less power to process recycled items than it does processing items from raw material. So remember to always to recycle!!!!!!!

In Social Studies, we are learning about cultures. A culture consists of traditions, beliefs, foods, languages, religions, clothing and more.  In Canada, we have a multicultural environment, which was a result of immigration. This means that we have many different types of cultural heritage in Canada. Under multiculturalism all citizens are treated equally.

Canada helps people in a culture be equal with other people in another culture through the charter of rights. There are also many cultural festivals or events like Winnipeg’s Folklorama, where people from a culture can celebrate and share their heritage with other people. These gatherings also help people understand and respect other cultural backgrounds.

Literature Circles E.L.A.

Hello, everyone! My name is Rohan and I am here to talk about Literature Circles, also knows as Lit Circles for short. Lit Circles are meetings about certain books to encourage thoughtful discussion and a love of reading in young people. Here is an overview of what a Lit Circle really is; small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by students' responses to what they have read. You may hear and talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story. Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books.  It is a way of increasing a student's interest in books because socializing and education are mixed into one category, Lit Circles! As Mrs. Sosnowski's Grade  7 E.L.A. students, we are all divided into groups of 5's and 6's, with each group reading and responding to a different book based on interests and reading levels. Each book is divided into six sections, with each section being a different amount of pages. For every section, there is a meeting, every Monday and Thursday. For every section, we are supposed to write a summary about what we read and we are asked to answer a teacher question, varying for every section. Everyone also has jobs to complete about the section, and the jobs are the following: Discussion Director, Word Wizard, Character Analyzer, Story Mapper/ Predictor, Connector/Travel Tracker, and Researcher. My group consists of me, Ryan, Zayda, Yeji, and Michael, and we are reading the book called "Now is the Time for Running". I find Lit Circles to be interesting, and I think it is a unique way of expressing ideas. Thank-you for viewing my blog and listening to what I had to say.

Gym low organized games

  Good morning 7A

In our gym class, the subject we are learning but mostly playing is low organized games. In this unit we basically play games and do some conditionings such as weight lifting and running. the last game we played in this unit was capture the flag dodge ball, this game was invited by our gym teacher. the games is like dodge ball but there are flags on each side. Once you passed the side to grab a flag it is no more dodge ball, it turns into tag. My favorite game was bench ball. I was one of the tallest so it was easy for me.

the way you play and set up bench ball is you take benches and opposite of the gym. One you have that you can pick a player form your team to go and stand on the bench. people from your team have to throw the ball at the player on the bench, if the player on the bench catches the ball  you get to help him catch and join him on the bench, once your whole team is on the bench you win.

E.L.A Grammar

Grammar is often a generic way of referring to any aspect of English that people object to (though grammar doesn't just apply to the English language). So this basically means that grammar is the logical aspect of a sentence, (if a sentence makes sense or not). It requires one to have a common & logical sense. Languages can be confusing at times, so grammar is the logical understanding of a sentence, which is composed of a predicate, a subject (though sometimes more than one subject or predicate), & proper punctuation, as well as other things and such but for now let's move on.

Here is an example of good grammar - I am well educated.

Here is an example of bad grammar- I is good! educated?

As you can see knowing which synonym & antonym is very vital for grammar as well. One also must be used to the English language, since grammar isn't just about writing properly, but saying and or speaking properly (though some of us may have accents). For example, if a man had said to you

"You bad?" you probably don't know what he means by that. If someone else had said to you

"You don't look so good" you most likely know what he or she means, or at least have more of a clue.

Contractions are also quite important for they are shortened versions of 2 words. One example of a contraction is don't. An example of a word that people believe is a contraction but really isn't, is ain't.
Ain't isn't a proper contraction because there are no other words that can build upon this contraction.
Though contraction isn't that much vital when talking to someone, but are quite important when writing.

So to summarize grammar is quite vital when being educated, it is the logical aspect of sentences, paragraphs, etc. & without it, none of us would understand what we're saying to each other. Though slang is a different topic and may defy some rules of grammar, but in a sense, is some other people's aspect (idea) of logic, since an idea, aspect, sense of logic may vary.

Math (Fractions, Decimals and Percents)

Math Factions, Decimals, and Percents          By Ivan

A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction. The percent symbol looks like this: %. A percentage can be converted into a decimal, and a fraction. In the world you will see percentages in your electronic device, at the shopping center ,and many more other places or things. A percent is always out of 100. Percent means per 100. A decimal is used to separate whole numbers less than 1. A decimal was originally named decimus (in Latin), then to decimalis (modern Latin), and finally decimals (in the 17th century). In the world you will see decimals in drinks and in pi (3.1415926535...) A fraction has a numerator and a denominator.
A fraction is a part of a whole number. In a fraction the numerator represents equal parts. In a fraction the denominator cannot be 0. A fraction can be also shown as a ratio. A fraction can be converted into a decimal Ex:1/4= 0.25

FRENCH CLASS

This year in french class we are learning about Christmas vocabulary.  In french you need to memorize the Christmas vocabulary and then do a test about it. We are also learning about sports in french class you need to know how to say every sport in french. You also need to know if it is masculine or feminine. In french we are also learning about how to change a sentence into a question or how to respond to a question properly in french.

Alyssa's blog post on Art

In Art right now we are doing quotes. Everyone in class has a quote book which they write their quotes in. So every month we write out 10 quotes that we like and right down in our quote books in fancy writing. One of the fancy writings most people use is Calligraphy because Mr. Cotter says it is the easiest. I think it is pretty fun because then I get to see a bunch of different quotes, and there are some really nice and thoughtful quotes out there. I find that it isn't hard because you don't have to do it in class, so you can also do it at home.

The definition of Quotes is repeat or copy out (a group of words from a text or speech), typically with an indication that one is not the original author or speaker.

A great quote is very similar to a great poem. The sad fact is that many people are too impatient to read quotes.  Reading quotes requires much more than reading good long prose from the reader. A good quote requires the reader to pause to see the real meaning of a single sentence or a few sentences.

When ever I find a quote that I like I always like to write it down, and I have found other people do that to, so I think that you should too.

Quotes are very extraordinary, and there is almost always one that match your feelings. And that is what I find extraordinary about them.

There are many different types of quotes in the world, so that means that there is a quote out there just for you.
